Introduction to Farm Emergencies, part two

The first module is designed to give participants an overview of local farm emergencies. It will involve discussion and demonstrations of farm machinery, structures, chemicals, and people. This awareness presentation will teach emergency responders how to recognize and initially manage (size-up) various hazards that they will encounter while arriving at the scene of an agricultural emergency and how to effectively preplan for farm related emergencies in their communities. The second module is designed to teach emergency responders (fire, rescue, EMS) how to properly manage emergencies involving machinery entanglements in various settings. Tractors and machinery are involved in nearly 50% of farm deaths and disabling injuries so rural responders must be proficient in how to manage incidents involving this equipment whether on the farm or off. The principals learned in this module have application to typical machines used on the farm as well as in manufacturing industries so this module is applicable to non-rural emergency responders as well. Participants will learn how to anticipate and control various forms of stored energy and develop rescue strategies from various types of machines. Emphasis will be placed on teamwork to achieve the best possible care for the patient and property that is involved in the incident. This operations/technical level training will teach emergency providers how to efficiently manage farm tractor & machinery related emergencies following NFPA 1670 Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Rescue Incidents.
